Finishing Strong
At the start of the fourth quarter in high school football and basketball games, when you see teams raise their right arms in the air with four fingers extended, they are “telling” everyone that they are laying claim to the predicted dominance of their team in the closing minutes of the game. They are proclaiming that they are in far better shape, that they want this victory far more than their opponent and that they will make every effort to ensure a stunning victory. Their opponent may look better on paper, but here in the fourth quarter (or as it’s called “crunch time”) they will out-hustle, out-think and out-play their opponent. In track, it is called the “final kick”. It is basically coming on strong to the finish.
How does this relate to our PCA family? We want our students to finish this school year on a great note. We want them to show that “final kick” as the school year finishes. Just like those teams that raise four fingers high over their heads, we want our students to have a healthy pride in how they finish and not to “limp across the finish line”. We want them to academically run well and finish even stronger. Because of our commitment to doing everything for God’s glory, we all want our ending performance to reflect what our Lord is doing in and through us. Instead of “coasting into the dock with our oars up”, we want to push ourselves even more as we reach down into ourselves for that extra effort. We don’t want to be like the race car driver who has to get out and push his car across the finish line because he ran out of gas!
It seems every parent remembers their personal bout with “senioritis” when they had their college acceptance letter in hand but found it challenging to get fired up to seriously keep up the good work for the remainder of the school year. “Good enough!” became the new standard of performance. Unfortunately, some “good enough’s” were so low that the university sent another letter stating they had second thoughts about their admission and were giving their spot to a deserving person on the waiting list. Shock!!!
Unfortunately it is not only seniors who can fall into this trap of letting their feelings dictate their motivation. We all know that very little would ever be accomplished if people just went by their feelings rather than by a decision of the will. This is why we must rely on asking our Lord for the determination, perseverance and motivation to do our best. Here at the beginning of April is the time to “make your move” to finish strong, not at the end of May. We want to be known as people who finish strong!
